"Anybody who terrifies you is sixty five percent water.

And everyone yous love is fabricated of stardust,

and I know sometimes you cannot even breathe deeply,

and the night sky is no home,

and yous have cried yourself to sleep enough times that you are down

to your last ii percentage, but

nothing is infinite, non even loss.

You are fabricated of the sea and the stars,

and ane 24-hour interval you are going to observe yourself over again. "

✨✨✨

Dear lite seeker,

If you are at all like me, this cute verse form resounds deep in your soul.

Information technology certainly did right when I outset came across it. That was several years ago now- correct after I graduated college with my degree in Art Photography/Art History, a fancy award for "best senior honors thesis" for my underwater artwork and enquiry on Pandora, a giant oppressive pupil loan neb, a zillion more than artistic and scholarly ideas... and non a damn clue how to brand a living doing ANY of what I learned and loved. Not a damn clue how to even create or balance a budget, to be honest. Certainly not on my income.

To quote comedian John Mulaney's recent stand up special "What IS college??....Stop going! Until we figure it out!"

They teach you how to make art in art school. And certainly how to critique it. Simply they don't teach you how accept any sort of career in the arts where you tin make a living. And they don't even mention that it might be proficient to have a business course or two- because really if y'all're an independent artist making and selling work, you lot're a small business organization so marketing and concern classes might bereallybeneficial.

Don't become me wrong. I learned and grew SO MUCH in fine art school, not just as an artist and scholar just every bit a person.

I cherish that fourth dimension fifty-fifty though I would never advise anyone else currently interested in the arts to pursue a career through college art courses. (If you happen to know a young aspiring creative person, please tell them to seek business and marketing skills and to get the creative skills by watching videos online and bymaking the art. Lots of information technology. Really badly at first. That's all you actually need.)

Of course, I didn't know any of this and so.

You don't know what you don't know.

And yous can't inquire what you don't know TO ask.

I causeless ane went to art schoolhouse to learn how toexist an artist. Ya know, paying bills and all. Because if y'all tin't do that so y'all can't proceed showing up at the studio, doing the art, or being the creative person. So when I exited fine art school with the most expensive piece of newspaper I've endemic to engagement (my diploma) and non a inkling in the earth what to exercise to pay for it, I did what I've ever washed-I made art on the side.

I convinced equally many friends as I could, as oftentimes equally I could, to dress upwards both in and out of swimming pools and create mystical magical imagery with me.

✨✨✨

Nosotros had tons of amazing fine art adventures in those years.

It was beautiful.

And information technology was hard.

Living lonely in a new city, working more than total time at just over minimum wage, at a serial of soul crushing jobs and with crushing pupil loan debt those jobs yet couldn't pay for, while as well learning every bit much about business and marketing as you tin can to build your dream artistic business concern (and having most of that journey be teaching you what youdon't actually desire your business concern to be)... it's a lot.

In that location have been many many nights where I "could not fifty-fifty breathe deeply." And I've definitely cried myself to slumber many nights and been down to my last 2% way more than is healthy…

But the night sky IS always home.

And so is the sea.

✨✨✨

So this piece of poetry called out to my stargazing, star-and-underwater- photography-adventure-chasing, mermaid soul instantly.

"You are made of the body of water and the stars. And one 24-hour interval you volition discover yourself again."

What instant relief. When your dream is the sea and the stars (and the unique artistic combination of the two) and you are downwardly to your final 2%, living on high hopes and a prayer and figuring it all out as you go, these words are a magic balm.

These words AND a few others:

"Life is sometimes hard. Things become wrong- in life and in beloved and in business and in friendship and in health and in all the other ways that life can become wrong. And when things get tough, this is what you should do.

Make good art.

I'm serious. Hubby runs off with a political leader? Make practiced art. Leg crushed and and so eaten past mutated boa constrictor? Make good art. IRS on your trail? Make good art. Cat exploded? Make skilful fine art. Somebody on the Net thinks what you practise is stupid or evil or it'south all been done before? Make good art. Probably things volition work out somehow, and somewhen time will have the sting abroad, just that doesn't even matter. Do what simply you tin exercise all-time:

Make. Good. Art."

-Neil Gaiman, Brand Skillful Art

Brand good fine art. So that'southward what I did.

It'south what I've ever done.

And the art itself  is  always somehow a magic lotion of its own. (Though maybe that's because it's art about the sea and the stars, which are ever a magic balm to my soul.)

And now for the outset time ever, as I step into a business that is exclusively about applying those difficult knock earned business skills to only the sacred ART that my soul has always yearned for, the art from this past catamenia of my exploratory career is available in this small and limited collection of fine art prints.

I've called this post-college nebulous body of work "the sea and the stars volume i" for awhile now, though I oasis't done much with information technology except one or two local art shows. It took me far too long to willingly embrace that I didn't want to accept a creative business concern to subsidize my art hobby.

What I actually most want, what my soul has always longed for, along with the sea and the stars, is an Art business.

And speaking of soul deep messages and fabulous fine art, I'm pretty sure it was this Finn Butler poem (read for the zillionth time I'm sure) which finally made me realize "Oh hey. That's actually what almost all of my art and inspiration has in common/is about. The Sea and the Stars. And the soul level connexion echoing through them. Huh!"

Information technology ALWAYS AMAZES ME HOW Art BEGETS ART.

-In fact, almost every piece in this collection is inspired by some other piece of art- a story, a song, a novel, a film, etc. Bank check out my weblog for the details on your favorite pieces!-

And inspirational moments of clarity virtually oneself.

✨✨✨

That's always my goal equally an creative person, also. I believe in the power of art to transform united states of america, inspire united states of america, empower us through sacred and transcendent wonder, and human action as catalyst for the states to transform the world . I believe that art and stories hold deep, soul-level value for that same reason.

My promise is always that by examining my artwork, by truly sitting with the beautiful imagery my soul calls me to make, you will be inspired to examine new perspectives of yourself and your life.

And I promise that it changes you.

I hope it brings you closer to knowing your home and your soul.

(Just like this Finn Butler poem and all of the beautiful art that inspired these pieces has done for me…)
